Wedding License guidelines in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania


Delaware


  • If you live in DE, you can get the license in any of the 3 counties-New Castle, Kent or Sussex

  • If you do not live in DE, I suggest you get the license in the county that the venue sits in. Get license 1-2 weeks prior to wedding

  • License will go back to the county you got the license from

  • Kent takes walk ins, New Castle and Sussex appointments need to be made

  • Sussex requires you make an appointment 2 months in advance)

  • I am registered in all 3 counties use the above name should any of the counties ask

  • DE wedding licenses filled out must be returned within 15 days

  • DE wedding licenses are good for 30 days from the date of issuance.  There is a mandatory 24-hour waiting period on the license.

  • DE licenses must be filed within 15 days of ceremony



New Jersey


  • If you live in NJ, you can get the license in any township you live in.  Look up your township marriage bureau and inquire.  Some may want you to make an appointment. Get license 1-2 weeks prior to wedding

  • If you do not live in NJ, I suggest you get the license in the township the venue sits in

  • License will go back to the township/municipality the venue sits in

  • NJ wedding license filled out must be returned within 5 days

  • When you go to fill out information to get your license, they will want to know the name of your officiant, their address and contact number.  

  • NJ wedding licenses are good for 30 days from the date of issuance. There is a mandatory 72-hour waiting period on the license.

  • NJ licenses must be filed within 5 days of the ceremony



Maryland


  • Whether you live in MD or not, you must get the license in the county where the venue/where you will be getting married 

  • Call that county marriage bureau to see if you need to make an appointment

  • License will go back to that said county

  • MD license filled out must be returned within 5 days

  • MD wedding licenses are good for six months

  • There is a 48-hour mandatory waiting period upon issuance



Pennsylvania


  • If you live in PA, you can get the license in the county you live in

  • If you do not live in PA, I suggest you get the license in the county that the venue sits in

  • Most counties in PA want you to make an appointment to get license. 

  • License will go back to the county where you get the license from

  • PA license filled out must be returned within 10 days

  • PA licenses are good for 60 days upon issuance

  • Mandatory 3 day waiting period
